‘We made it through’: Brazilian actress Claudia Raia, 56, welcomes baby boy named Luca after surprise pregnancy

Brazilian actress Claudia Raia revealed she and her husband Jarbas Homem de Mello welcomed their first child together, a baby boy, named Luca, last month.

The 56-year-old telenovela star, who naturally got pregnant three years after doctors told her she began menopause, announced the exciting news on her Instagram by posting a photo with her spouse, 53, and their newborn laying on a hospital bed.

‘Luca arrived lighting up Saturday night! He arrived here on February 11th, already claiming his space. We made it through,’ she captioned the post.

The mom-of-three shares her daughter Sophia, 19, and son Enzo, 25, with ex Edson Celulari.

Since welcoming her latest addition, she has shared multiple photos of her newborn at home with his siblings and dad as well as more from the hospital.

Previously, after a failed cycle of in vitro fertilization (IVF), Raia said she ‘looked at God’ and said: ‘OK. I get it. It wasn’t meant to be.’

After receiving nasty comments about being an older mom, Raia reminded haters that ‘there are a thousand ways to be a mother.’

‘In my case, being 50 plus was one of the challenges, but it’s worth reflecting on that today there are a thousand family formats and so many other forms of maternal love,’ she wrote on Instagram.

The actress continued: ‘We need to stop this mania of judging or putting limits on other people’s maternity, because each person sees this experience in a very intimate and unique way.’

According to The Sun, upon learning of her pregnancy, she thought her doctor was ‘crazy.’

‘I’m 55 years old,’ she recalls telling her doctor. ‘Then I took the test and it came back more than three weeks pregnant.’

In 2019, the Office for National Statistics revealed the number of women getting pregnant over the age of 40 nearly double over the past two decades.

Statisticians said women are putting off having children until they are older for a variety of reasons, including building a career first.

The conception rate among women aged 40 and over has been climbing since 1990.

Although later pregnancies come with a higher risk of complications such as miscarriage, pre-eclampsia, or a need for caesarean section, they are increasingly common.

Increased access to higher education, higher employment rates and the ‘increased importance of a career’ are factors behind the soaring rates of older mothers, as is delaying motherhood because of uncertain labour market conditions or housing, the ONS said.
