Enough to make you Scream! Spooked California locals call cops on creepy figure dressed as Ghostface from slasher movies stood at crosswalks – only to discover it was stunt for latest installment in series

  • Ghostface stood near Sonoma Plaza at First Street East and East Napa St.
  • Sonoma Police were alerted to the suspicious person on Monday
  • Police learned when they went to investigate it was a Paramount publicity stunt

California locals called police after seeing an eerie figure dressed as Scream killer Ghostface standing ominously at crosswalks in a quiet town.

The masked figure was spotted looming at the edge of a crosswalk in Sonoma on Monday.

They then crossed the road, before mugging for the camera wearing the ghoul mask first seen in 1996, when the original Scream movie premiered.

Unlike the fictional Ghostface of the movies, this one wasn’t wielding a blade, and didn’t slash anyone to death.

When officers went to investigate they learned that the person underneath the costume was nothing to fear but was there to promote the upcoming horror flick

But locals were still frightened and fearful of possible copycat crimes – with some calling police.

It was only then they learned the truth; the figure was part of a stunt dreamt up to generate publicity for Scream 6, which hits theaters on March 10.

Over the last few weeks Ghostface has been spotted in various cities across the country, including New Orleans, St. Louis and Sonoma, the stand-in for the movie’s fictional town of Woodsboro.

Ghostface who appears to be getting a kick out of all the fuss has gone to Twitter telling those who are panicked,  ‘I was just minding my own business.’

The cult film revolves around are a streak of brutal murders in the sleepy town of Woodsboro and a Ghostface killer that targets a group of teenage victims.

The slasher franchise directed by Wes Craven started in 1996 starred Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, and Drew Barrymore.

Campbell quit after Scream 5. Arquette and Barrymore’s characters were slaughtered by Ghostface himself – with Lillard’s character dying after being unmasked as Ghostface in the first movie.

Cox remains one of the few original characters standing, and will feature in Scream 6, which sees the latest incarnation of Ghostface terrorize New York City.

The first film in the franchise was shot at the Sonoma Community Center just a block away from Sonoma Plaza.

The community center served as the high school in the film, and the original film  was filmed all over the Bay Area in 1996.

Santa Rosa, Tomales and Healdsburg were other California areas featured in the film.
