A lawyer who has been promoted three times in three years has shared the two different types of employees, and why one will always be promoted over the other.

Aleks Nikolic, 27, from Sydney, had $3,000 worth of credit card debt when she tackled her bad spending habits and set herself on a path to building an impressive net worth of $180,000 at age 26.

Aleks recently shared a clip on Instagram highlighting the difference between ‘strategical’ and ‘tactical’ workers.

‘There are two types of people in the workplace. Are you a strategic or a tactical worker?’ Aleks asked. ‘The strategic workers get promoted. Here’s why,’

Aleks described tactical workers as ‘grinders’:

‘They’ll do more work faster and this used to be me. You’d always wonder: Why am I not getting promoted?’

The reason why they weren’t getting promoted, Aleks said, was because they weren’t solving the ‘actual needs’ of the company.

On the other hand, strategic workers ‘focus on the problems that are behind that work’.

‘For example, a strategic problem in the team might be that there’s too much volume of work against the resources. A strategic solve to that problem might be self-serving some of that work so clients don’t even need to approach your team.’

Aleks said if you feel like you’re not getting promoted, you need to focus on ‘strategic solves’ to problems and figure out what your team, business and managers’ problems are – and solving them first.

‘Look into the reason behind the work and what can be done to streamline, automate, delegate or prioritise to make your team more efficient,’ she said.

‘It’s hard for management to ignore someone when they’ve moved the needle and transformed how work is done.’

Hundreds of people who saw Aleks’s clip were quick to thank her for sharing her wisdom, writing ‘omg I’m a grinder’.

‘I want to unpack this more for different industries, I feel like that would be very insightful,’ one woman wrote.

‘I suppose it really depends on the industry, privileged situation and how willing/knowledgeable an employer is in how they observe how each individual operates within that business,’ another added.

Aleks said her manager encouraged her to think about the ‘strategic differences’ she makes in the workplace and what kind of a legacy she was creating in order to achieve career success.

‘Here is the career advice that has changed my life, and I think it has contributed to a complete overhaul of my career,’ Aleks posted on Instagram.

‘I’ve been promoted three times in three years, so I think it works.’

The 27-year-old said while she used to think that doing her job ‘but faster’ was the key driver for a promotion, she was ‘completely wrong’.

‘I’m in a team of very smart, very high-performing people, so doing more work doesn’t really mean all that much,’ Aleks said.

‘Then my manager asked me something. He said: “What is your impact?”

‘And by that he meant what are you doing that you believe is a legacy or what are you doing that makes a meaningful change to strategic problems as opposed to your tactical wins which is just doing your job faster?”‘

Aleks said when she realised this, the ‘entire game was changed’ and she has had increasing career success.
