A man competing in a regatta has died after falling from a yacht off Port Lincoln, on South Australia‘s Eyre Peninsula.

The man was injured during the event and plunged into the water while competing on the first day of the Lincoln Week Regatta, organised by the Port Lincoln Yacht Club.

Regatta chairman Steve Kemp said the man’s fall triggered a rapid response from the yacht crew and race management to recover him as quickly as possible.

The sailor was attended to while in the water by crew members and a mayday call was made to management.

A powerboat was immediately dispatched to recover the sailors and once on board, the man in his 60s was given CPR and treated with a defibrillator as the rescue boat returned to shore.

They were met by ambulance crews but police said the man could not be revived.

Mr Kemp said the yacht club was deeply saddened and was offering every possible support to its sailors, the crew from the yacht involved, other competitors and its volunteers and staff.

‘We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the sailor at this difficult time,’ he said.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death and a report would be prepared for the coroner.
