A 48-year-old man has been shot by police after he pointed a gun at officers at a rural police station.Ā 

The armed man approached officers at Tenterfield police station in northern NSW on Thursday at 545pm.

Officers from theĀ New England Police District shot the man, before disarming him.

‘A critical incident team of officers from State Crime Commandā€™s Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident,’ NSW police said in a statement.

It will also look into the discharge of the police firearm.

The investigation will be subject to independent review.Ā
