Shakira has defended her new song in which she appears to take a swipe against her ex Gerard Pique and his new girlfriend.
The Columbian singer, 45, called Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol 53 ‘a catharsis and a release’.
It comes after she was accused of ‘internalised misogyny’ after revealing the lyrics in her new song which seemingly take a swipe at Gerard’s supposed new love Clara Chia Mart.

The song has gone straight to the top of Spotify’s Top 50 Global chart and became the Latin song with the most streams in a single day in the platform’s chart history.
Shakira took to her Instagram to celebrate the achievement and defend herself against the misogyny criticism, by saying the song was for ‘women who rise up against those who make us feel insignificant.’
She wrote: ‘I never thought what for me was a catharsis and a release would go straight to number one in the world.

‘I want to embrace the millions of women who rise up against those who make us feel insignificant.
‘Women who defend what they feel and think and raise their hand when they don’t agree – They are my inspiration.’
Shakira and Gerard announced their split after 11 years together in June and they share two sons – Milan, nine, and Sasha, seven – together.

But her new lyrics have caused some backlash with many accusing her of internalised misogyny – while others say she is only doing what all male artists do in their songs.
One said: ‘The new Shakira song screams internalised misogyny and a bitter divorcee. let it go woman.’
Another who shared an article about the song said: ‘Really, Shakira? #misogyny.’

Someone else wrote: ‘Shakira objectifies and objectifies herself by denigrating her ex’s new partner under the phrase ‘change a Rolex for a Casio’. We are humans not objects. There is nothing empowering in being mean to another woman. You have to know how to leave.’
Another continued referring to Clara: ‘A woman who has the right to be with whoever she wants because people don’t belong to anyone.’
However others defended her for speaking out, as one Tweeted: ‘What is happening with Session 53 of Bzrp and Shakira only shows that there is still a level of misogyny, of those who prefer that a woman carry out her process in silence and without bothering anyone.’

Another said: ‘Human artistic creation has always been nourished by one’s own experiences (especially the bad ones)!’
Since the break-up, Gerard has been spotted passionately kissing his new love interest Clara as they appear to be far from hiding their new relationship.
In an apparent brutal dig at the former Manchester United and Barcelona defender, Shakira sings: ‘A lot of gyms. But work your brain a little bit too.’
Shakira makes another clear allusion to Clara with the lyrics: ‘She’s got the name of a good person. Clearly is not how it sounds.

‘Clearly’ in English translates as ‘Claramente’ in Spanish, clearly referencing Clara, as one fan pointed out.
Elsewhere Shakira, who is facing a £12 million tax fraud trial in Spain, sings: ‘You left me the mother-in-law as a neighbour. With the press at my door and a debt with the taxman.
‘You thought you’d hurt me and I came back stronger. Women don’t cry any more, women invoice.’
Another part of the song says: ‘From love to hate there’s only one step’ before Shakira adds: ‘No hard feelings baby, I wish you the best with my supposed replacement.’
Only a small part of the lyrics had been leaked online ahead of the world release, referencing a part of the song where the mum-of-two sings: ‘I’m too big for you, that’s why you’re with someone just like you’ before continuing: ‘I’m not coming back to you, even if you’re crying or begging.’
She also used another play-on-words in Spanish with the word ‘salpique’ in a clear reference to her ex, singing: ‘I only make music, sorry that I splash you’ which in Spanish is ‘Yo solo hago música perdón que te salpique.’
Gerard, who fathered two sons with Shakira during their 11-year relationship, appeared to respond to the poisoned darts thrown in his and his new partner’s direction ahead of the song’s full release with a tweet featuring circus emoticons.
It is not the first time Shakira has seemingly shaded Gerard in her music after making reference to a ‘necessary’ split with an ex who is as ‘cold as Christmas’ in her song Monotonía.
Awkward: The singer-songwriter, makes it crystal clear she is referring to the 23-year-old her former partner is rumoured to have started dating last year before they split, saying: ‘I’m worth two 22’s. You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo. You traded a Rolex for a Casio’
The song, meaning Monotony in English, starts with Shakira singing in Spanish: ‘It wasn’t your fault, nor was it mine. It was monotony’s fault. I never said anything but it hurt me. I knew this would happen.’
She then alludes to the relationship being over before it ended, singing: ‘It’s a necessary goodbye. What used to be incredible became routine.
‘Your lips don’t taste of anything to me. Now it’s the complete opposite.’
Appearing to reference the end of her relationship, she says: ‘You left me because of your narcissism. You forgot what you used to be.

‘Distant with your attitude, and that filled me with worry. You didn’t give even half. I know I gave more than you.’
In the music video, Shakira walks dejectedly through a supermarket with tears in her eyes before being shot through the chest by bazooka by a mystery man.
Symbolising her heartbreak, she walks through the streets with a hole in her chest, holding her bloody heart in her hand, before someone stamps down on it.
Shakira also took an apparent swipe at Gerard as she penned an Instagram post about healing after betrayal on New Year’s Day.
Starting the New Year off on a positive note, she wrote: ‘Even if our are still open in this new year, time has surgeon’s hands. Even if someone has betrayed us, we must continue to trust others.’
She continued: ‘When faced with contempt, continue to know your worth. Because there are more good people than indecent ones. More people with empathy than indifference.
‘The ones who leave are fewer than the many who stay by our side. Our tears are not in vain, they water the soil our future will spring from and make us more human, so that even while suffering heartache we can continue to love. Shak.’
Elsewhere, video footage also recently emerged which is said to show Gerard’s new girlfriend in the footballer’s family home before his split from Shakira.

Shakira has reportedly been left ‘devastated’ at the unearthed footage from August 2021, which was recorded ten months before she announced she had split from her partner of 11 years.
Clara Chia Marti appears to be in the background of a zoom interview the footballer did from his family home in Barcelona, while Shakira was reportedly abroad with their two children.
Gerard went public with his new girlfriend and co-worker, Clara Chia Marti, 23, after confirming his split from Shakira last summer.
The interview footage shows a woman resembling Clara stepping into the frame as Gerard spoke to US video live streaming service Twitch.

Speaking to Page Six, an insider claims Gerard, 35, and Shakira, 45, were still living ‘happily together’ at the time.
The source said the singer is ‘devastated to learn that this woman clearly felt at home in the house they shared with their children’, adding: ‘They were very much still together at that time.’
It came just weeks after Shakira and Gerard reunited in court to ratify their separation child custody agreement.
The exes announced their separation in June after 11 years together, and they recently said they’d come to a suitable arrangement for their children after a 12-hour talk.
They formally signed the agreement in Barcelona, entering and exiting the court separately while flagged by their legal teams.
Gerard, who has retired from football, is said to have given his blessing to his former partner’s move to Miami with their two sons to avoid a lengthy legal battle.
Shakira’s wish to move to the city where she used to live and part of her family are based is understood to have been the principal sticking point in the couple’s previous failure to strike an out-of-court settlement.
Spanish press have also reported that Gerard will be able to spend ten days a month with his children as part of his custody agreement with Shakira as well as holiday time.
Catalan daily El Periodico , laying bare what it described as the ‘small print’ of the couple’s accord, said: ‘Gerard Piqué will have his children 10 days a month and the entirety of the three holiday periods that govern the United States, apart from Christmas and the summer holidays, starting next year.
Speaking out on the split back in September, Shakira admitted that it had been an ‘incredibly difficult’ time for her and the family.
Meanwhile, Gerard and Shakira have reportedly agreed to sell the exclusive Barcelona mansion where they raised their two sons.
