Golden Globes 2023 host Jerrod Carmichael has sparked fury online after making a joke about Will Smith and Rock Hudson which has been described as ‘off-color’ and ‘homophobic.’
After a commercial break of the ceremony, which honors the best in film and American television, Carmichael, a 35-year-old American Comedian, quipped: ‘We actually presented Will Smith with the Rock Hudson award for best portrayal of masculinity on television.’
The comment intended to be a jab at Smith’s expense, after he infamously slapped Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, March 27, 2022, resulting in his decade long ban from the prestigious event.
But it instead invoked fury among Twitter users – because although discreet about his sexual orientation – Hudson was, at the time of his death in 1985, one of the most famous people to have died from AIDS. His identity as a homosexual man also revealed after his passing.
Golden Globes 2023 host Jerrod Carmichael has sparked fury online after comparing Will Smith to the late Rock Hudson in what people have described as an ‘off-color’ and ‘homophobic’ attempt at humor
A shocked audience gave 35-year-old Carmichael some faint applause after the attempt at humor while he tried to hold the room by loudly applauding at his own comment, pleading: ‘So please give it up for Will Smith. Please! Please!’
Twitter users slammed the American stand-up comic some questioning whether he’d been aware of faux pas he had just made.
One user said: ‘Jerrod Carmichael, who I never heard off, drops homophobic BOMB re: Rock Hudson, whose death from AIDS was credited with bringing attention to an epidemic that went on to kill millions of men, women and children of all backgrounds from around the world. @goldenglobes.’
Another said: ‘That Rock Hudson joke was f****** stupid and homophobic. #GoldenGlobes2023.’
Others questioned whether they had heard the ‘joke’ correctly one user saying: ‘Am I missing something or was that just a really homophobic joke about Rock Hudson?’
Another echoing the confusion: ‘Did I mishear that or did they just cheap ass joke demean Rock Hudson and Will Smith after the heartfelt LGBTQIA boosting by Ryan Murphy.’

Later in the evening, Carmichael described the venue that’s hosting the Globes, the Beverly Hilton, as ‘the hotel that killed Whitney Houston.’
‘Jerrod Carmichael is a goddamn disgrace. Before that sick ‘joke’ about Houston, he made a disgusting remark about Rock Hudson/Will Smith,’ another said slamming Carmichael in reference to the Houston and Smith joke.
Hudson was a leading man and sex symbol in Hollywood during the 50s, keeping his sexual orientation discreet throughout his career.
Smith, on the other hand, who identifies as a heterosexual male, is married to a famous actress Jada Pinkett Smith.
Last year, the 54-year-old, who became a household name in the 90s, was publicly crucified after slapping Oscars host Rock, when he made a fairly innocuous joke at his wife’s expense.
Carmichael, who famously came out as gay himself during his HBO stand-up special Rothaniel, is yet to explain the quip and why he drew a link between the seemingly unrelated actors.
But while his ‘joke’ appeared to fall flat, with audience members and Golden Globe viewers, comedy legend Eddie Murphy was lauded for mocking Smith for the same incident.
The iconic funnyman, 61, won the coveted Cecil B DeMille award at the 80th annual ceremony and shared three ‘simple’ tips to enjoy a long-lasting career.
‘Pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your f****** mouth,’ he said.
The star-filled room filled with laughter, in stark contrast to Carmichael, who many viewers of the Golden Globes asked not to invite back to host again.
During his speech, Murphy shared his three ‘simple’ tips: ‘Pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your f*****g mouth’
Viewers stormed Twitter to share their delight at Murphy’s cheeky joke.
One tweeted: ‘Eddie Murphy just dropped the mic on Will Smith at the Golden Globe Awards tonight. Love it!’
Another wrote: ‘Been an Eddie Murphy fan since the 80’s… only Eddie Murphy can drop a F bomb on a Will Smith joke… truly special. Amazing talent!!!’
In November 2022, Smith appeared on an episode of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, where he revealed there was a ‘rage’ inside him the night he slapped Rock.
He also added that when he got home after the ceremony, his nine-year-old nephew was waiting and had seen the slap, asking him, ‘Why did you hit that man, Uncle Will?’
Will revealed on the show: ‘My little nephew Dom is nine. He is the sweetest little boy.

‘We came home. He had stayed up late to see his uncle Will, and we are sitting in my kitchen, and he is on my lap, and he is holding the Oscar, and he is just like, ‘Why did you hit that man, Uncle Will?” Smith said.
Will then took out his tissues and looked at Noah, joking, ‘Damn it. Why are you trying to Oprah me?’
He added, ‘It was a mess, you know. I don’t want to go too far into it to give people more to misunderstand.’
After discussing his new movie, Noah joked they hadn’t seen him for a while, as Will began to open up about what he said was ‘a horrific night, as you can imagine.’
‘There’s many nuances and complexities to it. But at the end of the day, I just… I lost it, you know?’ Smith admitted at the time of the interview.
Smith can still be nominated for, and win, Oscars but will not be allowed to attend ceremonies until after April 8, 2032.
