‘My life is like a dream’: Nile Rodgers revealed he ‘feels like a million bucks’ while candidly discussing his legendary music career in an interview with MailOnline

Nile, who has been sober for 28 years after nearly dying from drug and alcohol abuse, has faced two harsh Cancer battles in his life.

He was first diagnosed with an ‘aggressive’ prostate cancer in 2010 but after undergoing treatment was given the all-clear three years later.

However, just four years later he was diagnosed with kidney cancer, which was cured surgically. The star remains positive and has no intention to take a step back from his successful music career.

Speaking on his health, Nile said: ‘Every now and then a couple of things go wrong, like I misstepped the other day and fell through the stage, whoops. But you know I carried on, I didn’t stop the show and it took a long time for the physical wound to heal but we were on tour, we had to work through it, we had no choice.

‘It’s really rare, I’m a two-time cancer survivor so I’m like bring it on, lets go. I feel like a million bucks.’

Speaking on if he ever pictured himself making music and performing at the age of 70, Nile said: ‘I thought I’d be a musician my entire life but I never thought I would have hit songs.

‘I just do what I do when I do it. It’s an adventure, I find that there’s always something around the next corner and I’m ready. I honestly love experimentation ,I love new music and new people. I’m just that inquisitive, I can’t help myself.’

When asked if he has any plans to take a break from his career, the star answered: ‘A break? I don’t even know what that is. The truth of the matter is I really love it.

‘Yesterday I was working on two different projects and by the end of the day I can’t tell you the sense of fulfilment. It fills me with gratitude and so much joy.’

Nile continued: ‘I don’t know how to explain it, I’m still child like when it comes to this. I feel like I’m the luckiest person in the world and I work really hard. I probably get more joy out of it now. When I first started as exciting as it was, there was a lot of distractions.

‘To get to create music for a living it’s almost like you are your own entertainment, even though you are playing for other people the sense of fulfilment is incredible. When you are young it’s really cool but now when I go out on stage I know I have a mission to make people feel good.

‘The truth is I never believed there would come a time in my life that I would be playing my own music for people, growing up I was always playing other people, so this is a dream come true.’

Entertainment platforms like TikTok have taken the music world by storm and almost half of Brits now find their musical inspiration on social media.

Research by Samsung reveals 1 in 3 (31%) young Brits dream of being a music star on entertainment platforms like TikTok, but nearly a fifth (18%) admit they lack the inspiration to put their music creations into practice.

To offer inspiration to aspiring artists, Samsung has partnered with music legend and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Nile Rodgers for the Make It With Nile docuseries, to uncover the new ways music is being made today.

Speaking on the project, Nile said: ‘I think it’s great, any form of reeking the public to me is fantastic. It’s easy to think about the possible negative stuff, but I’m not really like that I always try to look at the positive. An artist can reach anybody out there it’s amazing. It’s an amazing gift to me, that’s what we live for.’

The music icon admitted: ‘It hasn’t been my way of getting new music out, I’m sort of like an old dog, I can’t learn new tricks but I appreciate the fact other people can do it really well.

‘I’ve worked with some artists who are only known because of their social media success. Especially people who have just came on the scene after the pandemic, it’s been interesting to watch.’

Looking back on the start of his career, Nile explained: ‘When I started, we had to be in front of the people that were consuming our music and it’s just such a different world now. To be able to reach billions is amazing, it’s an artists dream come true. Now the thing is you have to make art that’s compelling and make people want to come and hear you.’

In the docuseries, Nile is seen working in the studio with TikTok sensations ALTÉGO, Armani White, INJI and Dréya Mac.

He chats to the creatives about making it in music and how it’s changed over the years thanks to advances in smartphone technology, platforms like TikTok and opportunities like StemDrop.

Giving MailOnline an insight into more of his upcoming projects, Nile revealed: ‘I was just in the studio with Coldplay, it was our first time playing together and it was just incredible.

‘That’s the school that I come from, you walk into a studio, sometimes they are total strangers, but you form a bond right there on the spot because you create together and there’s no better feeling in the world.

‘95% of all the artists I’ve worked with is usually because of a chance meeting, I walk into a room and start talking to someone. We meet, we get along and the next thing you know we are in the studio making music.’
