Man charged with attempted murder after young woman was allegedly doused in petrol and set on fire while trying to break up argument at ‘rowdy house party’

A man has been charged with attempted murder over an incident where a woman was set alight at a house party.

The woman, 32, continues to cling to life at The Alfred Hospital after receiving serious burns about 2am on Wednesday, at the party on Rivercoast Road in Werribee South, about 32km southwest from Melbourne’s CBD. 

As well as the attempted murder charge, a 43-year-old Werribee South man will also face charges relating to causing serious injury.

Forensic officers combed the scene for of the house party for clues on Wednesday morning

He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on December 29.

A 45-year-old Werribee South woman was released pending further enquiries.

Neighbours have told Daily Mail Australia while the party had been rowdy, the noise had been kept to a minimum before all hell broke loose.

He said she had been trying to defuse the situation when she was allegedly doused with petrol and set alight, Wyndham TV reports. 

Two other people received minor injuries during the incident. 

Family members of the injured woman, who come from New Zealand, did not wish to comment and asked for privacy when contacted by Daily Mail Australia.

The alleged victim is believed to have lived at the Werribee South property for the past three years. 

Police remained at the crime scene late into the day on Wednesday, cordoning off the section of grass where the woman was allegedly set on fire.

A blue Esky was could be seen alongside a discarded glass bottle of Malibu rum.

Detectives at the scene took soil samples to do chemical tests to ascertain what accelerant may have been used 

Arson squad detectives took a green slide-style shoe from the scene and bagged it as evidence.

Officers also took dirt from where the fire was lit to probe it for any chemical that may have been used.
