‘Impossible to get sacked’: Aussies list the jobs they think are recession proof – so do you agree?’

  • Aussies locked in a debate online over the nation’s most recession proof jobs
  • The Reddit user wondered if a government job was more stable than his role
  • One person suggested hairdressers and funeral workers were most solid jobs

An Aussie worker has triggered an online debate over the most recession proof jobs in the country.

The user took to Reddit to reveal he had been offered a state government job and was trying to decide whether the role would be more stable than his current position with a private firm in the environment industry.

His question led to several suggestions for Australia’s most recession proof jobs.

One person suggested hairdressers and funeral workers were the most solid jobs in the country.

While others said nurses, social workers or electricians are the most stable.

The user said: ‘With all the talk of the coming recession, does it make sense to be in government or in private industry?

‘I currently work for a private firm in the infrastructure/environment space, but there’s an interesting opportunity to do similar work from the state government site.

‘I’ve got a mortgage so not keen on moving just to be made redundant. What’s the general consensus on job safety?’

One reply said: ‘I worked in the government years ago – it seemed almost impossible to get sacked if you were a permanent employee. I had co-workers playing Facebook games all day/browsing the net – no one ever said a thing.

‘Not to say that some public servants don’t do an incredible job – there’s just a whole lot that don’t do a whole lot.’

Another said: ‘Government is generally secure, but that’s why it doesn’t pay well.’

Several took the opportunity to suggest other industries that are recession proof.

One person said: ‘A guy I work with picks up dead bodies. Gonna assume that jobs pretty safe.’

A second added: ‘Haircuts and funerals, always steady. Also sex toys.’

A third said: ‘Job specific, but think of nurses and teachers, police, firefighters – they ain’t ever getting made redundant.’

A nurse said: ‘I’m in health – worked as a nurse aide during the GFC and now as a nurse. We are just as hungry as staff as ever. No need to fire anyone because people constantly quit when they have a mental breakdown from the stress.’

Australia could be plunged into chaos with spiralling unemployment and poverty if the nation goes into recession, leading economists warned last month.

If a recession occurred, then unemployment would rise rapidly, and poverty would ‘absolutely’ increase, Matt Grudnoff, senior economist and director of the economics program at The Australia Institute think tank told Daily Mail Australia.

Economist Ross Garnaut, a professor at the University of Melbourne, added that the recession cost would be ‘very high’ and send Aussies back to ‘long term unemployment’.

Mr Grudnoff said it could take years for Australia to recover from a potential technical recession – defined as two consecutive quarters of economic contraction.
