An Australian woman who found herself ‘sandwiched’ between two overweight passengers on a flight has revealed the response from the airline.

Sydney Watson, an Australian-American conservative political commentator, sparked a storm after she shared a photo of her three-hour flight and complained about being ‘wedged between two obese people’.

She faced an intense backlash online with American Airlines’ official Twitter account seemingly rebuffing her complaints.

However, she has now shared an email she received from the company on Monday, where American Airlines apologised and offered her a US$150 coupon.

The airline also claimed that attendants on the flight were ‘unable’ to change Ms Watson’s seat.

The email read: ‘I sincerely regret the enjoyment and comfort of your flight AA was diminished due to another customer exceeding their seat’s space.

‘We do our best to avoid uncomfortable situations regarding seats. I can understand your disappointment with the situation not being remedied to your satisfaction.

‘It seems that our Flight Attendants were not able to make changes to the seating arrangement. I’m sure you know, in the future, you are always welcome to discuss the matter with our flight attendants.

‘If we have other available seats, you’ll be allowed to move so that you can better enjoy your flight.

‘As a gesture of goodwill, I have issued you a $150 Trip Credit which will arrive via a separate email.’

The email added that the credit could only be used on another American Airlines flight.

Ms Watson didn’t immediately reveal if she was accepting the coupon, though she did retweet another tweet criticising the offer.

She also wrote: ‘I’d rather take the $150 American Airlines offered me as a refund and give it to someone who needs a PT or a gym membership.’

Ms Watson previously said she will ‘stand by everything I said’ after documenting her struggle for personal space and comfort on Twitter during the flight on October 11.

Initially, American Airlines told her: ‘Our passengers come in all different shapes and sizes. We’re sorry you were uncomfortable on your flight.’

‘I don’t care if this is mean. My entire body is currently being touched against my wishes. I can’t even put the arm rests down on either side because there’s no f***ing room,’ she wrote at the time.

‘I’m sick of acting like fatness to this extent is normal. Let me assure you, it is not.’

‘If you need a seat belt extender, you are TOO FAT TO BE ON A PLANE,’ she wrote. ‘Buy two seats or don’t fly.’

Ms Watson wrote that she initially asked one of the obese passengers if he’d like to swap seats with her. He was apparently siblings with the woman who bordered Watson on her either side.

‘He says, ‘no. That’s okay :),” she wrote. ‘…and then I started shrieking internally.’

She later wrote that ‘Both the fats are sweating on me.’

‘Have realized if I learn forward, I am less crushed. Only draw back is the man in front of me has his seat back and I keep getting smacked in the head when he adjusts in his chair.’

‘Humiliating,’ she wrote, followed by two crying emojis. ‘This will begin my villain arc.’

As the saga concluded, Watson wrote, ‘I am off the plane!!’

‘The ONLY saving grace was that EVERY flight attendant apologized to me. We had a laugh.’

‘They said they’d have given me free booze if I’d asked.’

Watson added that she had not personally booked her middle seat on American Airlines, rather it was booked for her by a company that paid to fly her to an event.
