Neighbours fans were left heartbroken as Emmerdale was crowned best Serial Drama at the National Television Awards on Thursday evening.

Taking to Twitter, viewers declared the Australian soap had been ‘robbed’ as they hoped the show would be honoured one last time after its axe earlier this year.

The ITV soap awarded off stiff competition beating the Ramsay Street residents, as well as EastEnders and Coronations Street to the coveted prize.

One viewer wrote: ‘You were robbed! You so should have won. I miss you Neighbours’.

While another penned: ‘So disappointed they didn’t win tonight, Emmerdale could have got this any other year but this was Neighbours last time and they should have won. In my eyes they win every time’.

Another agreed stating: ‘If there was an award for best written, acted and produced scene Neighbours would win hands down with Susan’s final scene. Just perfection.

Neighbours was axed after 37 years when Channel 5 decided in March not to renew its contract with production company Fremantle to finance and broadcast the series.

It has left die-hard fans of the long-running show – which commanded as many as 16 to 20 million viewers a day at its peak – completely devastated.

With nearly 60,000 viewers of the Melbourne-based soap signed a petition to keep it on British TV, but to no avail.

The soap ended in epic fashion in August with numerous former stars including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pierce returning briefly to the roles that made them famous.

The award comes as Emmerdale prepares to celebrate its incredible 50th anniversary later this month.

The award was the final one of the night, with actress Olivia Bromley – who plays Dawn Taylor – accepting the honour.

She said: ‘Thank you so much to everybody who has voted to us, it means the world to us, especially this year – our fiftieth year of Emmerdale.

‘We are so proud to take this home to Yorkshire. This is for everyone back home up north who has worked so hard. Here’s to the next fifty.’

Earlier in the evening, the cast and crew were surprised by a video from King Charles III.

The monarch said: ‘I am delighted to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Emmerdale. I’m afraid I’m so old I can remember when it was called Emmerdale farm.

‘It’s testament to it’s production team that it has since become an important British institution and a major British export.

What makes Emmerdale so special is it has kept true to the vision of its original writer who wanted to demonstrate that farming is not just a job, it’s a whole way of life.

‘On a daily basis, Emmerdale continues to depict what life is like for those who work the land and protect our precious countryside.

‘It also addresses the longterm sustainability of the way we produce our food.

‘It’s only right that the National Television Awards recognise the enormous contribution Emmerdale has made and I hope those watching will joining me in celebrating it’s 50th anniversary and wishing it an equally successful future.’

Meanwhile, there was double celebrations for the Yorkshire-based soap as Mark Charnock received the Serial Drama Performance prize for his role as Marlon Dingle.

Taking to the stage to collect his gong, the actor said: ‘So, just follow the king then! The three actresses, their work is off the scale, extraordinary work. I’d like to thank everyone at Emmerdale.

‘Every script was this heart-breaking gift, the Stroke Association who were so supportive. It feels like an important journey we’ve been on raising awareness. I’d like to thank the public, I didn’t think I’d any chance in winning this.

‘You’ve overwhelmed me by voting for me, I’m going to take this away and stare at it for ages.’

The actor has won wide applause for his portrayal of the chef’s recovery from a stroke.
