Travis Barker was ‘hospitalized for pancreatitis’ after undergoing colonoscopy

Travis Barker was ‘hospitalized for pancreatitis’ after undergoing colonoscopy that ‘triggered’ the condition, it has been revealed.

The 46-year-old Blink-182 drummer remains under medical care at at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, where his new wife Kourtney Kardashian is by his side.

According to TMZ, Travis’ doctors believe that his pancreatitis – which is an inflammation of the pancreas – was ‘triggered’ by a recent colonoscopy.

Sources tell the site that Barker underwent the colonoscopy exam recently; the procedure is usually performed to look for changes in the large intestine and rectum, such as swollen, irritated tissues, polyps or cancer.

However, in very rare cases, a colonoscopy – which involves a long tube being inserted into the rectum – can cause pancreatitis, a condition that usually requires hospitalization and can last for several days or, in some cases, occur over many years.

Symptoms of the condition – which can also be caused by gallstones or chronic and heavy alcohol use – include upper abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

The agonizing condition that landed Travis Barker in hospital: What is pancreatitis and how serious is it?

Pancreatitis is when the pancreas — a small organ behind the stomach that helps with digestion — becomes inflamed.

There are two types of the condition; Acute pancreatitis, which is triggered suddenly and subsides within about a week, and chronic pancreatitis, where the pancreas is inflamed from permanent damage over many years.

Acute pancreatitis is often linked to gallstones — which form in the gallbladder by the liver — and drinking too much alcohol.

But in rare cases it could also be triggered by a colonoscopy.

In one example published in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports, a 53-year-old woman developed pancreatitis after having a routine colonoscopy to check for possible cancers.

Symptoms of acute pancreatitis include:

  • Suddenly suffering severe pain in the center of the abdomen;
  • Feeling or being sick;
  • Having a temperature above 100F (38C).

Patients suffering from the condition are generally admitted to hospital.

Treatment includes being put on an intravenous drip and receiving pain relief. Patients may also be given liquid food through a tube in their stomach and oxygen through tubes in their nose.

Most cases of acute pancreatitis see patients discharged from hospital within a few days and recover after about a week.

But in some cases patients can suffer severe illnesses which may leave long-term complications. In very rare cases it can prove fatal.

About 220,000 people are diagnosed with acute pancreatitis in the U.S. every year, and 80,000 will be diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis, figures from the Pancreas Foundation suggest.

The star was taken to a Los Angeles hospital by ambulance on Tuesday after suffering from the medical issue, with his new wife Kourtney by his side as he arrived at local facility West Hills.

He was later transferred to Cedars Sinai Medical Center in an ambulance – while Kourtney, 43, followed behind in her Range Rover. It was not initially known what condition the rocker was suffering from, however ‘multiple sources connected to the family’ have now told TMZ that he has been diagnosed with pancreatitis as a result of a colonoscopy.

The procedure can be life-saving treatment as it allows your doctor to check the insides of your colon and rectum for cancer and polyps, which can be early signs of cancer.

However, although it is considered to be a fairly safe exam, it is not without risk and the most common side effect is stomach pain, cramping or the feeling of being bloated afterward. In very rare cases, the procedure can also cause pancreatitis – although there is limited understanding as to how this occurs, according to the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports.

The medical journal states that ‘pancreatitis should be considered a rare potential complication for patients who develop acute abdominal pain after colonoscopy’, adding that the condition will most likely be triggered by ‘procedural difficulties’ during the procedure, including ‘mechanical trauma’ to the pancreas.

A colonoscopy is performed using a long, flexible tube called a colonoscope that lets your doctor check the inside of your colon (large intestine).

But as the tool is passed through the splenic flexure, it can cause pressure trauma to the pancreas tail, which can then result in pancreatitis.

The latest reports about Travis’ condition come hours after he was pictured being wheeled into Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on a gurney – having been transferred to the hospital from local facility West Hills.

Travis was seen lying on the gurney while wearing an all-black outfit, the hood of his sweatshirt raised over his head, with his distinctive tattoos visible on his right hand, which was raised in the air as he was wheeled into the hospital by EMTs.

Kourtney, who was seen walking alongside her husband, was also dressed in all-black and had her hood up over her hair, her face shielded from the public.

Barker also cryptically tweeted, ‘God save me,’ at 10:45 AM PST on Tuesday morning prompting huge concern among fans before his condition was revealed.

Hours later, Barker’s daughter Alabama took to her Instagram Stories to ask his fans to ‘Please send your prayers’, adding a sad emoji – indicating that her father’s condition was quite serious.

She then posted a since-deleted image of herself holding her father’s hand as he lay in a hospital bed, captioning the photo – which was shared on TikTok – ‘please say a prayer’.

Travis’ face wasn’t shown in the photo, but he was seen sitting up in a hospital bed and holding his phone. A white medical bracelet could be seen on his right wrist, however Alabama posted a heart emoji over it to hide the rocker’s personal information.

The rocker’s other child – 18-year-old son Landon – has yet to comment on his father’s condition, however the teen spent Tuesday night making a guest appearance on-stage alongside Travis’ good friend Machine Gun Kelly, as he performed a sell-out show at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Landon shared several videos of himself performing Machine Gun Kelly’s song Die in California, on which the teenager is featured along with Gunna and Young Thug.

While Landon shared videos from his performance on Tuesday evening, he has yet to address his father’s illness at this time.

If the teenager had any serious concerns about his dad’s wellbeing, he certainly didn’t let it show on Tuesday night, when he also attended an after party for MGK’s sold-out show at trendy hotspot Catch Steakhouse.

There, Landon was seen leaving the event hand-in-hand with his new girlfriend, TikTok star Charli D’Amelio, having spent the night partying alongside Machine Gun Kelly, Megan Fox, Avril Lavigne, and Mod Sun.

Machine Gun Kelly also seemed unfazed by his friend Travis’ medical issues as he partied the night away – at one point even smashing a champagne flute on his head during a performance at the late-night event.

The rocker was left with blood pouring from his face after hitting himself with the glass while up on stage at the event – where he also shouted out ‘I don’t give a s***’.

Sharing a video of the moment on Instagram early on Wednesday morning, MGK joked: ‘This is where things turned.’

MGK carried on performing and appeared unconcerned by his bleeding face, as he moved onto the next track [My Ex’s Best Friend] while members of the crowd passed him tissues to suppress the bleeding.

Following the event, the star left the venue covered in blood and held hands with his supportive partner Megan Fox as she walked close behind him before heading home after the bash.

The incident comes days after Kourtney made a full recovery from her second bout with COVID-19.

She had contracted the virus for a second time in mid-June but had made a full recovery as of last week.

The couple were married just weeks ago in Italy, following a fairytale proposal that was captured on the new Hulu series The Kardashians.

The proposal came exactly one year after they first ‘hooked up,’ after several years of friendship.
