An armed man has been shot dead by police outside a restaurant in South Brisbane.

It is understood the man aged in his 20s was shot multiple times shortly after 3pm.

The Courier Mail report the man pulled out a knife before being fatally shot by police.

In a statement released by police they said the man was shot after threatening officers.

‘Preliminary information indicates police were called to Edmonstone Street, South Brisbane around 3pm in relation to the behaviour of a man,’ the statement read.

‘Following brief interaction with officers it is understood he threatened them and was shot.

‘The man died at the scene.’

Police have shut Edmonstone St between Russell and Melbourne streets with a crime scene declared and roads expected to remain shut for several hours.

Witnesses report hearing multiple gunshots and screams outside restaurant The Greek Club. 

One person told the Courier Mail police shot the man in the stomach.

‘Our manager was outside when he heard the shots and then screamed ‘everyone get down’,’ she said.

‘We all hid in an office for about 10 minutes because we thought it might have been a crazed gunman.’
