Liam Payne has declared welcoming son Bear with ex Cheryl ‘ruined their relationship but for all the right reasons’ in his most candid chat yet.

The former One Direction hitmaker, 28, and the Girls Aloud singer, 38, welcomed Bear in 2017 but split the following year following a two and a half year romance.

Speaking on  Logan Paul‘s Impaulsive podcast on Wednesday, the Strip That Down singer said he originally struggled with becoming a father at the tender age of 23, and detailed how Cheryl haemorrhaged ‘badly’ while giving birth.

He said: ‘I like to talk to other new dads. You don’t know what is coming and it’s different.

‘And to be honest with you, it ruined a relationship for me at that point but for all the right reasons. I was so excited for him to be born that I was actually worried if I wouldn’t love him enough.’

Speaking about the day the former couple became parents, Liam detailed a terrifying incident where Cheryl  ‘haemorrhaged quite badly giving birth’ – which left her resting for much of Bear’s first day.

He said: ‘So for the first 24 hours of his life,  it was me and a baby in the room and I was 23 and  had to take care of it and I didn’t even have any baby sisters or anything. It was fun.

‘The end of the night was me playing FIFA with my little boy on my arm like “this is the coolest thing ever”.

Liam praised his ex and gave an insight into their co-parenting, saying: ‘She is the best mum in the world. I couldn’t ask for someone better.

‘I get to take my son to school one or two times a week and it’s the best thing. The relationship we have now as friends has only grown more.

‘We broke up for a reason and now she gives me full autonomy of my life and to do what I do and I know he’s [Bear’s] taken care of. He is all she cares about and I couldn’t ask for more. They live like three minutes from my house.

‘I always glue myself to where he is. My life now is his. My money is his. I have several companies he can run if he wants one day or he can sell… but right now he’s only five so we have a long way to go.

‘He’s a lovely, lovely boy. We’ve been blessed.’

Detailing his fears over his young son following his parents into the entertainment industry, Liam added: ‘The scariest thing for me is him waking up one day and saying ‘I want to be famous.’

‘He already says “I want to sing Strip That Down on stage with you daddy” and that scares the c**p out of me because I know what it did to me.

I’ve protected his face since he was young. I chose to be famous, well a singing career, when I was 14… I know you can’t pop the lid back on.

‘He’s dying for it,  goes to rehearsals with his mum, I’ve got videos of him dancing, he wants to sing. At least I did all the wrong things for him so he doesn’t have to do them.’

Liam and Cheryl – who first met when he auditioned for the X Factor at 14 – confirmed reports that they were dating in February 2016.

Cheryl later kept fans guessing for months before confirming her pregnancy in the most public way – at a L’Oreal photoshoot, in which she posed in a close-fitting black dress and cradled her bump.

The couple confirmed the birth of son bear on Mother’s Day 2017, posting identical Instagram posts of Liam cradling their newborn baby.

‘My close friends and family know there are very few times when I’m left speechless…wow!’ Liam captioned the shot.

‘I’m incredibly happy to welcome our new baby boy into the world, it’s a moment that I will never forget for the rest of my life and my favourite memory I have so far.

‘I’m completely in awe of his incredible mother and how she has been the whole way through this, she’s really made my dreams come true.

‘We haven’t named him yet but he’s already capturing hearts including mine. I feel very blessed. Happy Mother’s Day everyone!’

Cheryl confirmed she and Liam had sadly split in a tweet addressed to her 7million Twitter followers in July 2018.

She wrote: ‘We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It’s been a tough decision for us to make.

‘We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together.’

Moments later Liam shared the same tweet with  his own followers on the micro-blogging site.

In 2019, Liam revealed he and Cheryl ‘rubbed off on each other in a bad way’ and hinted she ‘frightened’ him during a candid interview about their relationship.

The star also discussed how the pressure of their high-profile romance had led to the beauty becoming stressed over leaving the house.

Speaking on Jessie Ware’s ‘Table Manners’ podcast about the strain on their romance, the star said: ‘I think we kind of rubbed off on each other a little bit in that way. In a bad way, actually. All of that stuff puts so much pressure on a relationship.

Liam also hinted he was ‘frightened’ of Cheryl during their romance and said: ‘She’s strict. She’s surprised me sometimes.

When asked if he was frightened of her, he said: ‘Let’s say I’ve been on the receiving end of that quite a lot.’

Elsewhere on the podcast, Liam came under heavy fire after he spoke about his former One Direction bandmates.

The singer made a number of comments that did not go down well with fans.

He and the host discussed former bandmate Zayn Malik‘s headline-making online feud with Logan’s brother Jake Paul in 2020, which ended with Zayn’s then-girlfriend Gigi Hadid slamming Jake as ‘irrelevant’ and defending her beau as ‘a respectful king’.

Liam gave his thoughts on the drama, saying: ‘She tweeted something about get yourself a respectful man or something. That one didn’t age very well.’

The comment has been interpreted by fans as a reference to the allegation that Gigi’s mother Yolanda Hadid made last year, that Zayn had shoved her into a dresser and called her a ‘f***ing Dutch slut’.

Liam continued to talk about Zayn, saying there were ‘many reasons why I dislike Zayn’ but that he will ‘always be on his side’ because of Zayn’s alleged tough upbringing.

He said: ‘There’s many reasons why I dislike Zayn and there’s many reasons why I’ll always, always be on his side.

‘If I had had to go through what he went through, through his growth and whatever else. You know are your parents very supportive?

‘My parents are overly supportive to the point where it’s annoying at times and they don’t even mind me saying that. And Zayn had a different upbringing in that sense.’

He continued: ‘You can always look at the man for where he is and say, “Oh, yeah, whatever that guy’s a d*ck.” Right? But at the end of the day, once you understand what he’s been through to get to that point, and also whether or not he even wanted to be there…

‘I’m so misunderstood by myself more than anyone, like I don’t know what I’m doing or why I’m here. It’s like, I can’t sit here and d*ck on him because of whatever.’

Fans were unimpressed by Liam’s words and took to social media to come to the defence of Zayn, leading to Liam’s name trending on Twitter.

They called Liam out for reinforcing negative stereotypes, and told him to examine his own relationships, after it was reported that he cheated on his ex-fiancé Maya Henry.

Another argued: ‘bringing up the fact that other people’s parents weren’t as supportive as urs is not okay. the only way liam payne gets talked about is when he talks about the other 1D members. get a life it’s honestly embarrassing’.

Liam also faced criticism for claiming to have outsold his One Direction bandmates with his debut solo single Strip That Down.

He said: ‘We did the first song, billion streams. I think it outsold everybody within the band – and I was the last to go.’

However, many fans pointed out that the track is currently sitting at only 800,000 streams and argued that Zayn’s Pillowtalk and Harry Styles’ Sign of the Times had been more successful.

One tweeted: ‘”i’m the most successful out of the band” the way liam payne is dead serious while saying that literally shows how he’s a joke’

A second chimed in: ‘“i outsold all the boys” -liam payne on logan paul’s podcast as harry styles sold out 15 shows at msg, wembley stadium for 2 nights, headlined coachella two weekends, and broke chart records all while having class and respect for his ex band mates’.

Another claimed: ‘never seen a bigger flop in my life than liam payne. you went from being in what was the biggest group on the planet to sitting in a logan paul podcast talking about former members of your group’.

‘I didn’t think I’d live to see the day where liam payne is the most problematic member of one direction, my 12 year old self would’ve never believed it lol,’ agreed a fourth.
